Almost a century and a half of the history of the French crystal brand Daum is a real chronicle of the evolution of craftsmanship and artistic aesthetics of several eras. The innovative style of the brand determined fashion in the crystal world for a whole century and made a tangible contribution to the history of all art of the 20th century.
Jean Daum opened his workshop in Nancy in 1878, and in 1891, his sons, Auguste and Antonin, opened an art workshop at the factory. In 1968, Daum revived the ancient technique of pâte de verre or “glass dough”, which became the hallmark of the brand. The method is based on baking pieces of colored crystal inside a refractory mold. They accurately repeat its outlines, which gives an amazing texture.
The brand collaborated with iconic artists of the era: Dali, Cocteau, Armand, Picasso, Cesar and Bonetti. Today, the brand collaborates with Philippe Starck, Hilton MacConnico and Richard Orlinski, who created bright and provocative collections for Daum. And in 2016, Daum and Lesage Interieurs presented a joint work – a horse sculpture Le Majestueux made of black crystal in a silk blanket with luxurious hand-embroidered metal threads and fifty types of beads of different shapes and colors.
Every year, Daum presents collections of incredible form and content, which have long been the object of hunting for collectors around the world. Daum technique allows You to achieve complex and varied color transitions. The crystal turns out to be dense, but not transparent, but more like a matte stone, glowing from the inside. The history of this method is rooted in ancient Egyptian art.
